Canadian Tire

The story

Business - Excellence Award Winner: Canadian Tire

Jim Anderson, Associate Dealer

The Lighting Rebate Program proved to be very successful for Canadian Tire's B.C. outlets, helping several of them achieve their best-ever seasons for overall store sales.

A group of B.C. store owners, spearheaded by Surrey's Jim Anderson, wanted to participate in BC Hydro's 2005 Power Smart Lighting Rebate Program. They convinced the company's Toronto-based head office to commit to the program and then coordinated the participation of the B.C. stores.

Canadian Tire then brought in the largest number of compact fluorescent bulbs and torchieres and holiday light-emitting diode (LED) light strings of any participating retailer in B.C.

The results

  • Customer traffic in stores increased dramatically due to the Lighting Rebate Program events.
  • Several stores achieved their best-ever seasons for overall store sales, as well as sales of energy-efficient lighting products.
  • The stores helped increase customer awareness of energy-efficient lighting products, driving higher levels of participation in the rebate program.

Going above & beyond

  • Canadian Tire's Lower Mainland stores donated 90 strings of LED lights to the Christmas light display at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver.
  • Head office coordinated the installation of solar technology on St. Paul's Hospital's roof to power their holiday lights.
  • Head office also created a group to evaluate new products that can reduce impacts on the environment.
