New Westminster Brewery District

District energy considered in development of historic area

Wesgroup Properties is developing a master-planned community on a 9-acre site in New Westminster that was home to a brewery operation for over 125 years.

Adjacent to the Sapperton SkyTrain station, the transit-oriented development will include a mix of residential, retail, office and health services spaces. At full buildout the site is expected to include eight buildings housing up to 1,250 residents and 175 businesses.

Working with BC Hydro, Wesgroup is considering a district energy system to improve the environmental performance of the development. The district energy system would provide space heating, domestic hot water and possibly space cooling across the site, using a combination of high-efficiency natural gas boilers, chillers, and alternative energy sources.

BC Hydro's role

With the support of the City of New Westminister, BC Hydro has provided pilot project funding towards a feasibility study to determine the potential viability and value of the district energy project. BC Hydro Power Smart recognizes the value on working together with the City of New Westminister and this partnership has facilitated funding to be provided to the Brewery District development.
