Engineering & Technical Work

Because Site C was examined as a resource option more than 25 years ago, significant engineering design and environmental studies have been done. However, much of this information is now more than two decades old. Therefore, the project as originally conceived must be updated to reflect current information as well as to incorporate new ideas brought forward by communities, First Nations, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders.

Today's approach to Site C will consider environmental concerns, impacts to land, and opportunities for community benefits, and will update design, financial and technical work. For example, updates to the project may include operating changes, design changes or mitigation projects to minimize potential impacts to fish and wildlife.

Stage 2 involves engineering and technical studies and analysis to update and further define the potential project.

The following engineering studies and technical work are being conducted in Stage 2:

  • Field investigation on slope stability and foundation conditions and design slope of left bank
  • Updating of flood and earthquake design criteria
  • Studies to investigate options for potential location of construction materials
  • Determine the project impacts on reservoir shoreline stability and safety

Stage 2 Engineering Information and Field Work

The following Engineering and Technical topics were discussed in Round 1 Consultation, which concluded June 30, 2008:

  • Project design elements
    • Reservoir impact lines use discussions guide
    • Water management
  • Infrastructure
    • Relocation of segments of Highway 29
    • Worker housing

The following Engineering and Technical topics were discussed during Round 2 Consultation, which concluded December 3, 2008:

  • Project design elements
    • Reservoir preparation considerations
    • Sourcing dam construction materials, and relocation and reclamation of excavated soil and rock
  • Infrastructure
    • Potential public use of the powerhouse access bridge and associated access roads

Additional topics would be studied and investigated, should the potential project proceed to Stage 3.

In the spotlight

BC Hydro is conducting field studies as part of Stage 2 of the potential Site C project.
