McNair Creek Hydro Project is a 9.8 megawatt capacity development that officially began operation on November 3, 2004. Located on the Sunshine Coast near Port Mellon, this project was a successful bidder in the 2001 under 40 GWh green call and is expected to contribute 38 GWh/year to the BC Hydro grid.
Owned by MC Hydro Holding Corp., which comprises developer Renewable Power and five other investors, the plant was completed on time. It demonstrates innovative technology, including a process control monitoring system that will track over 650 process components as well as weather data in and around the plant. The system will report on the efficiency of the plant to ensure that the project maximizes the energy capabilities of the creek.
As part of the environmental enhancements, the project completed a spawning channel in September.
"As many as two dozen chum salmon were counted in the channel in the fall of 2004, which bodes well for the spawning season," said Marc Soprovich, Principal of Renewable Power Corp. "In addition, a number of black bear have been seen as well as elk grazing on grass along the penstock route, showing the environmental values that can be enhanced by projects like this."
It is estimated the project will ensure a reduction of approximately 12,000 tons of CO 2 emissions as a result of using clean hydro.
