For two days, she waited for the fog to clear. When it lifted Monday, Lauren Woolstencroft put together two blazing runs to score her first gold medal of the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games.
Stay tuned for more.
Woolstencroft, a 28-year-old engineer with BC Hydro, is a bona fide para alpine skiing star. And she proved it again Monday by winning Canada's second gold medal of the Games with a dominant performance at Whistler.
Woolstencroft's combined calculated time of one minute, 51.97 seconds was more than six seconds faster than silver medallist and chief rival Andrea Rothfuss of Germany, who finished in 1:58.35. Canada's Karolina Wisniewska took the bronze medal with a time of 1:58.84.
Woolstencroft was sitting first after the first of the two runs Monday, but did not play it safe the second time around, taking nearly four-tenths of a second off her first-run time.
The 28-year-old Calgary native, born missing both legs below the knee and her left arm below the elbow, is on a quest for five para alpine ski medals at these Games. She was supposed to get a first shot at a medal in the downhill on Saturday, but fog postponed that race and the other so-called "speed" events including giant slalom, until later this week.
