Hummingbird nests and hatches two chicks at BC Hydro substation in Burnaby

BURNABY – Two hummingbirds recently hatched at the Lougheed substation in Burnaby.

BC Hydro crews discovered the nest while preparing the substation for maintenance work. To ensure the birds weren't disturbed, crews built a barrier around the work site.

Migratory birds' nests are protected in B.C. Birds sometimes nest at substations and on other infrastructure like power poles to protect themselves from the weather and predators. This creates a safety concern for the birds, the public and BC Hydro crews. To prevent wildlife from using these sites as habitats, BC Hydro crews install wildlife protection measures, like fenced yards.
