Don't be powerless in a storm-related outage

Stormy, winter weather increases the chance of local power outages in B.C. Last year, more than 1,700 outages were caused by bad weather across the province.

BC Hydro prepares for storm season year-round and crews can activate storm response plans at a moment’s notice. It is difficult to predict how much damage to the system a storm may cause and how long a power outage will last. Therefore, it's important for customers to be prepared for an outage.

BC Hydro encourages customers to prepare by:

  • Having an emergency kit ready that includes: flashlights, a battery-powered radio, extra batteries, warm clothing, blankets, a first-aid kit, ready-to-eat non-perishable foods and bottled water.
  • Knowing what number to call if power goes out: customers are asked to call BC Hydro at 1 888 POWERON to report an outage or a fallen power line.
  • Knowing where to look for restoration times if power does go out: BC Hydro has a mobile-friendly website that includes storm-related information.
  • Learning how to keep your family safe: if you see a fallen power line, stay at least 10 metres away at all times.
