BC Hydro at work: Vancouver Island crews work to restore power following wire theft

Thirty-five BC Hydro employees helped to restore power to the village of Ditidaht, a First Nations community near Port Alberni, over the weekend after it was discovered that copper grounding wire had been stolen from 300 utility poles delivering power to the community.

The theft made electrical distribution equipment unsafe for the village, and power needed to be cut to the community on Friday, so that crews could make repairs safely. Power was restored on Sunday.

Metal theft is a crime that affects public and employee safety and impacts the reliability of our electrical system. If anyone has any information about this crime, they are asked to contact the local RCMP detachment at 250.723.242 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1.800.222.TIPS.
