October 2009
Replacing a compressor isn't the first thing that comes to mind when a company looks at ways to cut back its energy costs. But an Abbotsford windows manufacturer discovered that savings – in this case about $17,000 a year – sometimes come from unusual places. Also this month, we take a look at how BC Hydro's proposed new distribution rate structure for Large General Service Class customers will work, and how it's designed to promote conservation. And lastly a reminder that the fully-funded Energy Manager offer deadline is November 30, 2009.
New compressor, big savings

For many manufacturers, air compressors are a critical piece of equipment, powering tools throughout the facility. That's why it makes a difference to have the most efficient air system possible.

Dynamic Windows of Abbotsford cut their energy bills by $17,000 a year through Power Smart's Small Compressed Air Initiative. Not only will the company enjoy those cost savings year over year, the Power Smart incentive provided up-front capital and resulted in a reduction of the payback period on their new premium efficiency compressor to around one year.

Conservation & rate changes

BC Hydro is proposing a new rate structure to promote conservation and encourage the efficient use of electricity by commercial and industrial customers in the Large General Service class.

The application put forward by BC Hydro proposes to divide the existing Large General Service class into two new rate classes:
  • Medium General Service (MGS) customers, whose annual maximum peak demand is between 35 and 150 kW of electricity; and
  • a new Large General Service (LGS) customer group, whose annual maximum peak demand is more than 150 kW of electricity.
We recommend phasing into a flat rate structure for the new MGS class; and a Two-Part rate structure for LGS customers that provides a credit or a charge for changes in usage above or below the customer's historic levels.

Development of the new rates has included extensive customer and stakeholder engagement over the past year.
