B.C.'s
industrial sector is busy finding ways to boost environmental performance
and save some energy costs along the way. This month we look at
a B.C. forest products company that, just months after hiring an
energy manager, has already identified savings
of more than 2 gigawatt hours a year. We also look at a mechanical
pulping and processing research initiative that could save
1,000 gigawatt hours per year in B.C., and we talk to consultant
Jack Vanier about making
a case for the hiring of an energy manager. |

Sinclar
Group gets busy
In July of 2008 the board of the Sinclar Group, a B.C. forest
products company, started talking seriously about energy management.
A year later they had an Energy Manager and a fully-approved
Strategic Energy Management Plan in place.
How are they progressing toward their target savings of more
than 12 gigawatt hours per year? Over just a few months, Sinclar
has achieved an annualized savings of over 2 gigawatt hours – much
of that coming from one program aimed at reducing leaks in air-driven
equipment.

UBC
research paying off
In 2005, BC Hydro Power Smart began working on a
research project with the University of British Columbia and
other industry partners with a lofty goal: reduce energy consumption
of mechanical pulping and pulp processing by 20%.
Now at its midway point, the project has already hit its target
in laboratory testing, with mill trials planned to start soon.
The results point out the value of collaborative research developed
between BC Hydro, research institutions and industry partners – funded
by BC Hydro's Power Smart Technology
Innovation Program.

Making
the case for an Energy Manager
Jack Vanier is a huge proponent of energy management as a process
and, specifically, of energy managers as a means of getting
it right. He sees BC Hydro Power Smart's Industrial
Energy Manager Initiative – which provides 100% funding
of a position for those who apply by November 30, 2009 – as
a unique opportunity.
The challenge is to convince senior management to support and
commit to the initiative.
"It's important to identify the person who's in a key
position, who can bring that support back," says the energy
management consultant.
