Industrial
lighting. It may be a critical production input – as it is
at Houweling's
Hot House – or it may just do its job in the background,
as with Safeway's
warehouse operation. Either way, making sure it's efficient
can make a big difference to your bottom line. Our two lighting
stories this month profile two different programs – the New
Plant Design Program and our Industrial Lighting Initiative – both
of which can help you install lighting systems that do a great
job and help cut costs. Plus, we bring you details about the advanced
world of Monitoring,
Targeting and Reporting (MT&R). Just when you might think
you have no more electrical efficiencies to be found – MT&R
provides the tools and analysis for continuous improvement (and
continuous savings). |

New
Plant Design Program
a great fit for hot house
Sometimes, an efficiency project has unexpected side benefits.
Houweling's Hot House in Delta, needed to add new lighting,
with the goal of increasing crop flexibility. They tapped BC Hydro's New
Plant Design Program for help with the design and costs
of an energy-efficient system. Now, the tomatoes are growing
faster than ever.

Safeway
leverages incentives
to fast track upgrade project
Safeway's warehouse operation in Burnaby, B.C. distributes
products to more than 70 stores across the province. With that
many moving parts, lighting plays a critical role and a lighting
upgrade was on the "eventual" priority list.
But with a Power Smart
site investigation, some helpful engineering suggestions,
and an incentive
program to defray the costs, the warehouse is now saving
enough energy to power 112 homes a year.

Operating
in a black hole?
MT&R can help
Any manager knows good information is key to good decisions.
But conventional systems provide little or no real-time analysis
of electricity usage across your entire production floor. That's
where Power Smart's Monitoring,
Targeting and Reporting program can help – better
data, better decisions, and better savings over time.
