'Flying Canucks' to highlight Canada Post cheerfest Friday

Posted by Rob Klovance

Less than a minute's walk from BC Hydro's Power Smart Village, Canada Post will help crank up the 2010 Winter Games spirit level with a celebration featuring aerial stunts by elite Canadian athletes.

A few hours before the Olympic Flame enters BC Place Stadium, Canada Post has arranged for what they're calling an "Olympic-sized" salute at the Vancouver Mail Processing Plant, right across from the Library Square at 349 Georgia Street.

Festivities are set to run from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature appearances by Olympians including snowboarder Dominique Vallee, freestyle aerialist Jeff Bean and figure skater Emanuel Sandhu. And above all – high above all on hand – will be an aerial stunt show by the Flying Canucks, a collection of past and future Olympians by elite Canadian skiers and snowboarders known as the Flying Canucks.

The event, co-sponsored by General Mills, is the culmination of Canada Post's CHEER campaign, which invited Canadians to write messages of encouragement on postcards, pre-paid by Canada Post, found on specially-marked Cheerios boxes. A wall composed fo the signed postcards will be unveiled at Friday's event and will remain on display in front of the Canada Post plant throughout the Games.

Other highlights are to include the world's largest mailbox, and Canada Post will be giving away athlete-autographed red tee shirts to some lucky fans.

Don't forget to come by the Power Smart Village at Homer & Dunsmuir before or after the Canada Post celebration. And while you're here, grab a passport from a BC Hydro Outreach member to learn about how you can be entered in a daily draw for tickets to the 2010 Winter Games.
