Raindrops, up close and beautiful, a photo contest winner

2010 TPS Photo Contest - Nature's Jewels by Bethany Brouwer

Posted by Rob Klovance

Here at BC Hydro, we have a soft spot for water. It's what allows us to produce clean electricity in abundance and at competitive rates.

So it's no surprise that our Team Power Smart Photo Contest judges, faced with a tough decision between 10 finalists in the second annual contest, were unanimous in voting for a shot of raindrops on a leaf submitted by Victoria's Bethany Brouwer as the grand prize winner.

It didn't hurt, of course, that the shot is undeniably beautiful, both technically and in its composition. And it fit nicely into the conservation theme of "My favourite green thing".

For her work 'Nature's Jewels', selected the best among a whopping 660 entries in the member-exclusive contest, Brouwer wins the grand prize of a Nikon Digital SLR camera and Nikkor 18-105mm lens from London Drugs. The winning photo will also be displayed – very, very large – on two B.C. billboards, one on Highway 17 near Victoria, the other at the corner of 2nd and Ontario streets in Vancouver.

And all 10 shots selected as finalists will be featured in the Behind the Scenes Exhibition at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria from November 30, 2010 to January 9, 2011.

The nine runners-up all get prizes of a $100 London Drugs gift card and a copy of Earthopoly: Team Power Smart Edition. The runners-up, photo titles and caption (where supplied):

  • Mike Caputo, Kamloops: Island Trip, "Cloth diapers make my life green"
