Are you using LEDS for illuminated signage?

Illuminated signs catch the eye and can be good for business, unless they're costing you too much to power them. A switch to LEDs can lower those costs.

LED signs use just over 1 watt per linear foot, and they last a lot longer too

Do you use halo-lit channel letters, illuminated open-close signs, light boxes or other backlit signage to attract customers? If you do, operating these promotional tools could be costing you much more than they need to.

"Today, LED is the standard for illuminating outdoor and indoor commercial signage, things like menu boards in fast food restaurants and retail displays," says lightning engineer Cristian Suvagau. "Old-fashioned signs powered by neon or fluorescent lamps simply aren't cost effective any more."

On average, a fluorescent sign uses 18 watts per linear foot of sign (a linear foot is 12 inches), while a neon sign uses 12 watts per linear foot. An LED sign on the other hand uses 1 to 1.5 watts per linear foot. And while that may not seem like a big difference, this kind of promotional signage is usually illuminated 18 to 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which means the signs consume electricity constantly.

Another big benefit? LED signs last much longer. On average, LED signs will last between 60,000 to 100,000 hours, while fluorescents have a much shorter lifespan, just 12,000 to 20,000 hours, and neon signs, 60,000 to 80,000 hours. Because LED signs last longer, replacement and maintenance costs also go down.
