Conservation lands Port Moody man 2010 Winter Games tickets

It all started with a thermostat.

Last fall, Peter Mueller of Port Moody bought a new thermostat and wondered if BC Hydro offered a rebate for his latest energy efficient purchase. When he visited bchydro.com in search of a rebate, Peter ended up joining Team Power Smart and entering his name into a draw.

Three weeks later, Peter received a letter informing him that he had won tickets to a 2010 Winter Games event. "I was completely surprised," says Peter. "I didn't expect to win when I entered. In fact, my wife and I had already purchased tickets online to the ice dancing competition."

As an official partner of the 2010 Games, BC Hydro will provide clean, reliable electricity to power the Games. The company is also using the opportunity to promote electricity conservation to British Columbians

"Conservation will play an important role in meeting our province's future electricity needs and every British Columbian has a role to play," says Ann English, director of BC Hydro's 2010 Project Team. "Like Peter, customers throughout the province can win tickets by making a commitment to conservation."

Electricity conservation isn't a new concept for Peter. He already uses energy efficient appliances and is looking ahead at the possibility of installing Energy Star windows. "You can make a difference one step at a time," he says. "It's a matter of being aware. First, decide what your priorities are, determine what you can afford and go from there."

BC Hydro is helping to make conservation easier for all British Columbians. By signing up for Team Power Smart, customers can set an energy conservation target of 10% , get exclusive access to resources to help them reduce and track their progress – all in one place online.

"British Columbians can sign up for Team Power Smart at anytime," says Ann. "We will introduce new ways for members to win tickets throughout the year, so stay tuned."

"You can do as much or as little as you want," adds Peter. "Just do what makes sense for you."

In the end, Peter not only won tickets to the 2010 Games, but he got a rebate for his thermostat too.

The fall contest also included an early-bird prize. Learn how a Victoria couple enjoyed their early-bird Canucks prize pack.
