BC Hydro calls for scholarship applications
More than 80 awards available to students in a wide range of studies across B.C.
PROVINCE WIDE – BC Hydro is now accepting applications for its annual scholarship programs. From industry trades to human resources to engineering and marketing, BC Hydro's scholarships recognize students who are leaders and role models in their schools and communities and who display excellence in their particular academic studies.
This year, more than 80 scholarships are available. Additional scholarships are available through partnerships BC Hydro maintains with the BC Hydro Power Pioneers, Nicola Valley Institute of Technology, Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. (APEGBC), and the Jack Webster Foundation.
"BC Hydro is very pleased to support the educational dreams of young British Columbians," said BC Hydro's Community Investment manager Larina Lopez. "Our annual scholarship program is one of the ways we can recognize and reward the wide range of academic achievements of our young people."
In 2007/2008, BC Hydro is offering over 80 scholarships in the following disciplines and categories:
- General (not for a specific discipline);
- Aboriginal;
- Engineering and Technologists; and
- Trades Pre-Apprenticeship.
BC Hydro's scholarships are available to B.C. residents currently enrolled full-time in a public B.C. university, technical school, college, or who are in Grade 12. Students must demonstrate a balanced lifestyle and a commitment to pursue post-secondary education in any field.
BC Hydro's General scholarship is available to 20 B.C. students who write an essay (max. 300 words) on energy conservation, sustainability, safety or teamwork.
The L'École Polytechnique Memorial Fund scholarship ($1,000) is awarded to 14 B.C. female students at any B.C. university, technical school or college, or who are in grade 12 and will be pursuing a post-secondary education in any engineering or technical program.
Eight $1,000 Aboriginal Peoples scholarships are available to students who are status/non-status Indians, Inuit or Métis and are residents of B.C. They must plan to enroll in or are already attending a full-time post-secondary institution in any field of study. One $2,000 Randy Brant Memorial scholarship will be awarded to the top aboriginal student based on a combination of academic achievement and outstanding community involvement.
The $1,000 Trades Pre-Apprentice scholarship is available to 12 students intending to enroll in a pre-apprenticeship program or an entry-level trades training program at a vocational school, community college, university college or institute in British Columbia for electrician, mechanic, construction trade, millwright, machinist, power line technician or electronics technician. Applicants for this scholarship must have successfully completed Grade 12, including Math 12, English 12, and Physics 12 or its equivalent.
Scholarship application forms (PDF format) can be downloaded. The application deadline is April 2, 2007.
Through its Community Investment department, BC Hydro contributes more than $2 million annually in the form of donations, sponsorships and scholarships to support the cultural, social and economic well being of B.C.'s communities.
