BC Hydro and BCTC thank customers for conservation efforts

VANCOUVER – BC Hydro and the British Columbia Transmission Corporation (BCTC) would like to thank all customers for their conservation efforts while repairs were being made on a transformer at a downtown Vancouver substation. BCTC has indicated those repairs have been successful and the substation is again operating under normal conditions.

Conservation efforts were appreciated particularly during the warm weather. It is estimated the combined effort resulted in approximately an 8 per cent reduction in peak demand from July 10 to 25.

Conservation efforts not only help meet British Columbia's energy needs but can also result in measurable dollar savings for customers. BC Hydro hopes customers will look for ways to incorporate some of the energy savings measures from the past two weeks into everyday practices. Such measures, no matter how small, will help British Columbia become energy self-sufficient.

Suggestions for everyday conservation:

  • Reduce the intensity of air conditioning systems. Even raising the temperature just one degree will lead to considerable savings.
  • Turn off unnecessary lights. Turn off lights in common areas when they are not being used. In the summer months turn off lights near windows if possible.
  • Close blinds to keep out the summer heat. Heat from the sun causes air conditioning systems to work harder. Workers with east facing windows should close them at the end of the day to prevent early morning sun from entering the building. South facing workers should close blinds during the heat of the day and west facing workers should close their blinds at the end of the day to keep out the heat from the evening sun.
  • Shut down computers and turn off monitors at the end of the day. Computer monitors left idle for more than 30 minutes during the day should be turned off to conserve electricity.
