BC Hydro has successfully restored power to 87,000 customers on the Lower Mainland and on Vancouver Island who experienced outages as a result of this morning's wind storm. At the height of the storm, more than 250,000 customers were without power. Currently 163,000 customers are experiencing outages.
BC Hydro crews and contractors are continuing with restoration efforts, however some customers may be without power for several days. Key trouble areas include Vancouver, the North Shore, the Tri-Cities, Victoria and Burnaby.
BC Hydro is reminding customers to be extremely cautious around downed power lines. Some lines will remain down overnight and will be cordoned off. The public should stay back at least 10 metres or 33 feet.
Customers should also exercise caution when using generators and when connecting appliances directly to the generating unit. Generators should be used only in well-ventilated areas. Please do not connect your home portable generator directly to a house wiring system as it can create unsafe conditions for line crews working on the system.
