The 2010 Winter Games will be relying on clean and renewable hydro-electricity to keep the floodlights lit and the ice hard.
But what if there was a way for you to support your favourite sport – and to help spread the word about energy conservation at the same time?
Now there is. We've kick-started a Facebook application called Power the Games that helps you save like a champion and gives you a chance at tickets to see the 2010 Winter Games. Are you up to the challenge?
Power the Games asks you to commit to reducing your energy use by 10% over the next year, and lets you dedicate your savings to your favourite 2010 Winter Games sport. BC Hydro Power Smart's goal is to have 210,000 Team Power Smart members by the time the Games begin, and if all saved 10%, the energy saved would be enough to power the Games.
Once you've picked your sport, check back each day to check out our news updates and to take our daily conservation challenge. Each challenge is worth points that can take you up through the medal standings, from Participant to Gold.
(A tip: if you click the option to join Team Power Smart, you're automatically awarded points that get you ahead in the game – it's our way of cheering you on)
It's going to take a lot of people to make the 2010 Winter Games the greenest ever, but we can do it – with your help.
Each week, we'll be awarding prizes to participants who have taken a challenge, so it's easy to win. And you'll want to tell your friends to get their heads in the game, because when your event has enough supporters to be fully powered, we'll be drawing from only the powered up events to award 2010 Winter Games tickets to lucky participants.
We'd love to send you there, so check out Power the Games, and start saving like a champion!
Looking for us on Facebook? We've just launched our new Facebook Page – to find and fan us, go to the page now or type "BC Hydro" into Facebook's search box.
Our Facebook Page connects you to great content about energy saving tips, contests and updates about our conservation work – not to mention hilarious videos by Kids in the Hall member Kevin MacDonald.
It's as easy as one click to become a fan of the Page, and it lets your friends know you're part of the team helping to conserve power and secure B.C.'s energy future.
