More than a few reasons to attend Sustainable Living Expo

Have you been looking for an eco-friendly way to get rid of that ancient computer, laptop or Walkman? Are you looking for an excuse, any excuse, to visit Vancouver's new convention centre?

For these reasons, and many more, this weekend's EPIC Sustainable Living Expo adds up to the place to be for anyone in Vancouver concerned with sustainability. The show kicks off at 1 p.m. Friday, May 8th and runs through Sunday at the Vancouver Convention Centre, and it's riddled with guest speakers, workshops and exhibitors who can help you sort through all things green.

Highlights of this year's show include:

  • E-waste dropoff: Turn in your old cell phones to FIDO, which will also be accepting donations for the Vancouver Food Bank. The Electronic Recyling Association will also be on hand, and ERA will collect, fix and donate items to charities.
  • Sustainable cuisine workshops: Top chefs strut their stuff on the stage. Anyone for Queen Charlotte black cod, cured pork belly and taro root saute, miso coconut cream?
  • Green renos workshop: 7:15 p.m. Friday.
  • Eco shopping: Looking for something eco-cool for Mother's Day. Hundreds of exhibitors will be selling products and, on the main stage Saturday night, 'Eco-Supermodel' Summer Rayne Oakes will talk about her book Style, Naturally: The savvy shopping guide to sustainable fashion and beauty.
  • Get Power Smart:  BC Hydro Community Outreach reps will be on hand to help you learn about how to save energy and money in the home. Don't forget to sign up for Team Power Smart, which will earn you a chance to win a 2010 Winter Games ticket package.
