BC Hydro Awards for Power Smart Excellence
VANCOUVER – BC Hydro has handed out honors for outstanding achievements towards making B.C. a leader in energy conservation at the 15th Annual Power Smart Excellence Awards, held May 9 at the Fairmont Waterfront.
Among the recipients:
- Advanced Fiber Technologies – New Technology of the Year
Teaming up with the University of British Columbia, Advanced Fiber Technologies developed a new high performance rotor technology that created dramatic electricity savings at Canfor's Northwood kraft pulp mill in Prince George. At Northwood, the technology has shown potential electricity savings of $193,000 a year at that mill alone. If all pulp mills in B.C. converted to the same technology and achieved the same savings, enough electricity could be saved each year to power 15,300 homes. - ERCO Worldwide – Outstanding Energy Efficiency Project
Completely redesigning an energy cell to allow less energy to be lost as heat won ERCO the recognition of Outstanding Energy Efficiency Project. The redesign has improved cell efficiency so much, the project represents the single largest management initiative Power Smart has every supported. - The City of Richmond – Excellence in Energy Management.
Investing in new technologies such as web-based sports field lighting controls and LED streetlights, along with an exceptional approach to energy conservation, won the City of Richmond recognition for Excellence in Energy Management.
"Each organization is a leader in saving energy, promoting unique approaches to conservation and sustainability." said Lisa Coltart, BC Hydro's Director of Power Smart. "They are helping BC Hydro work towards the goal of 50% of B.C.'s future growth being met through energy efficiency and conservation."
The 2007 Power Smart Excellence Awards recognize customers and partners who are leading the way in implementing Power Smart solutions in the design, construction and renovation of buildings; applying innovative energy-efficient process improvements; or providing leadership in environmentally responsible practices and community involvement.
