The consulting firm has helped its business clients, Canfor's Northwood Mill and Husky Energy's Prince George Refinery, identify and implement energy efficiency opportunities.
"By making energy efficiency a top priority, the Power Smart Excellence Award recipients have shown how committing to energy efficiency is an opportunity to save money and help the environment," said BC Hydro Senior Vice-President, Distribution, Bev Van Ruyven. "Through leadership and innovation, Kraftur Engineering has actively promoted and supported energy efficiency, thereby helping other organizations be more Power Smart."
Kraftur Engineering has developed a unique screening model that analyzes all energy systems in a plant and identifies the candidates that provide the greatest opportunities for improvement. The result is a customized plan that lays out the most cost-effective and beneficial upgrades for implementation.
In 2004, Kraftur used its screening model in major energy studies at Canfor's Northwood Mill and Husky Energy's Prince George Refinery. Upgrades already installed at the two plants are saving one gigawatt hour of electricity per year, and projects pending installation will save another two gigawatt hours.
BC Hydro handed out Power Smart Excellence Awards to 21 organizations this year. Collectively, the 21 organizations saved more than 70 gigawatt hours of electricity this past year, which is equivalent to more than $3 million in annual energy savings – enough to power 7,000 homes each year.
Over the next 10 years, it is expected that Power Smart will save 3500 gigawatt hours of electricity or enough energy to power 350,000 homes each year. To date, Power Smart has also saved customers in British Columbia over 1.7 billion dollars on their electricity bills.
