Overview
On the North Coast, BC Hydro operates the Prince Rupert Gas Turbine and the Falls River G.S. The Falls River plant is located on the Ecstall River, near the mouth of the Skeena River. To protect fisheries habitats, the plant is required to have a streamflow through the station producing a minimum of 0.5 MW. The other station, the 46 MW combustion turbine generating station near Prince Rupert, is fired by natural gas with diesel back-up.
The Prince Rupert plant is registered to environmental international standard ISO 14001.
The North Coast region is connected to the electric system through transmission lines to Prince George. There are also connections to the Alcan system (BC Hydro purchases surplus power from Alcan's Kemano Project).
