You play a key role in making your community a diverse and healthy place to live, whether you act as an individual or as part of a group. Get together with others to work on local stewardship issues – it's the best way to get things done and to make your local environment a richer and more sustainable place to live.

Recognizing that every community's "to-do" list is different, we offer some community stewardship ideas in this guide.

Create Community Gardens
Growing food is an important way to decrease fossil fuel use and increase health. It's also a great way to meet your neighbours and to build a functional, and beautiful, gathering place.
Uncover Your Streams
Uncovering, or daylighting, streams redirects them into above ground channels and returns them to a more natural state.
Safeguard Your Sewers
Unlike the water that goes down your sinks or flushes from your toilet, water that flows into storm drains is not treated and filtered for pollutants. Most storm drains flow directly into water bodies, so anything other than rainwater is a potential contaminant.
Expand Recycling Options
Get creative about how to minimize garbage and maximize reusing and recycling in your area – and have some fun in the process.
Avoid Pesticide Use
Pesticides often kill off beneficial and essential insects, such as honeybees, which can have a devastating impact on the environment, and negatively affect the productivity of your garden. Avoid using pesticides on your own lawn and garden.
Start a Farmers' Market
If your community doesn't have a farmer's market, organize a group to get one started. Farmers’ markets boost local economies, provide a festive atmosphere for shopping, and support the production and consumption of local whole foods.
Recreate and Celebrate Together
A community that plays together stays sustainable. On a day-to-day basis, a community needs space for dogs to run, kids to play, and people to walk and recreate.
