Shut Down Equipment

switched off electric fan

Turning off equipment when not required and turning off heating pumps during warm weather can help make your office more energy efficient.

Affordability

Shutting down heating and cooling equipment when not required is an easy and affordable way to increase energy savings.

What you need to know

  • Use pumps, fans and electrical water heaters only when required.
  • Shut down non-critical equipment during peak demand period to reduce overall demand.
  • Shut down heating pumps when the outdoor temperature is above 18°C and if no reheat is required. During cooling, turn off reheating (if practical).
  • Shut down chiller, chilled water pumps, condenser water pumps and cooling tower fans at the earliest time possible in the evenings and on weekends. This may require a small stand-alone system for computer equipment rooms.

FAQ

Our office is unoccupied in evenings and on weekends but our computer servers need to be in a temperature-controlled room. How can we shut down fans and heating/cooling equipment to save energy costs?
Only use equipment when and where it is needed. Be sure your computer equipment room has a stand-alone system for cooling then shut down other areas of your building when the space is unoccupied. Consider whether you can consolidate servers to cut both the costs of energy used by servers and the energy it requires to cool them.
