Optimizing Performance in Commercial Buildings
Additional help in optimizing energy efficiency is on the way for large commercial buildings with a new program focused on identifying and implementing low-cost operational and maintenance changes.
The new initiative, which builds on previous Continuous Optimization activities and will be introduced this fall, is designed to assist owners of commercial buildings that are greater than 50,000 square feet. Commercial buildings that meet the program criteria can improve their energy operations efficiency through a five-phase process conducted by a Power Smart Alliance consultant. The process includes the following:
- Investigation: A fully-funded audit to determine the most cost effective measures to bring the building’s operation up to optimal energy efficiency levels
- Implementation: The customer executes the recommended measures, with up to two years to pay back implementation costs
- Feedback: Following implementation, BC Hydro will provide the tools required to ensure that the building’s energy consumption is on target
- Building Operator Training: BC Hydro will fund the cost of a consultant to conduct in-house training about continuous optimization for the customer’s building operations personnel.
- Coaching: BC Hydro will fund the cost of a consultant’s visit to the customer’s building every three months for the first year to ensure that building operators continue to undertake the recommended activities to ensure energy savings.
