New Construction Program Offers Multiple Benefits for Developers
On July 1, 2009, the New Construction Program replaced the High Performance Building Program. Program users can still enjoy many of the same program benefits, with the added bonus of a new tiered incentive approach geared to help customers achieve even higher levels of savings.
The New Construction Program provides more financial incentives, resources and technical assistance to help developers of new commercial, multi-unit residential buildings and industrial projects implement energy efficient designs. Not only are the capital incentives higher, but the new application process also makes it easier for developers to get involved by offering more ways through which they can participate.
The new program offers developers four participation options:
- Whole Building Design
Large buildings with potential savings of more than 100,000kWh, in the early stages of the design process are eligible for up to 100 per cent of funding for energy studies. Qualified projects can also receive incentives to implement the energy efficiency measures. These incentives will have multiple tiers to compensate for larger capital costs of more energy saving measures. - System Design
Small to medium buildings with potential savings of more than 50,000 kWh late in the construction process or interested in looking at specific energy efficiency systems are eligible for up to 100 per cent of funding for energy studies. Implementation incentives are also available for qualified projects. - Energy Efficient Lighting Design
For buildings with potential savings of more than 10,000 kWh, a $1,000 incentive is available for the development of energy efficient lighting design. Incentives are also available for the installation of energy efficient lighting. - In-Suite Energy Star Package
Rebates are available for new multi-unit residential buildings that install Energy Star labeled lighting, appliances and fans within each suite.
