MJM Furniture

May 2, 2006 – Thousands of dollars in energy savings is just one of the benefits that MJM Furniture Centre Ltd. gained from installing energy-efficient lighting.

Ed Mernagh, from the distributor West Coast Lighting, piqued MJM President Jeet Jaswal's interest with information about Power Smart's Product Incentive Program, which offers incentives for installing energy-efficient technologies. The two joined forces to implement lighting retrofits in MJM's Coquitlam and two Surrey stores.

By replacing incandescent lighting with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), the furniture retailer now sees business through a new light. The results point to a very bright future; the retrofits are saving a total 560,000 kilowatt hours of electricity each year, worth nearly $28,000 in annual energy savings. Because CFLs last longer, MJM anticipates saving an additional $3,400 on annual maintenance fees. MJM will also reduce air conditioning cost because lower-wattage lights produce less heat.

In addition to the financial and energy savings, Jaswal has achieved better lighting levels in his showrooms with less electricity, an improvement that even his customers have noticed.

MJM is one of many Product Incentive Program success stories. Since its November 2003 launch, the program has resulted in 669 project applications with total energy savings of 18.48 GWh.
