Distributors Take On Power Smart Month Challenge

There’s nothing like a bit of spirited competition to get Alliance members powered up. Eighty-four distributor branches and head offices vied for top honours this past October as participants in the second annual Power Smart Month Distributor Challenge.

Designed to help boost conservation awareness amongst customers during BC Hydro’s annual Power Smart Month in October, the competition invited distributors and their employees to implement various Power Smart promotional initiatives, each of which was worth a specific number of credits. The more credits earned, the better chance participants had of winning the competition’s prizes. All prospective participants received a Power Smart Challenge tool kit that included a variety of promotional items, such as buttons, posters and banners. The latter were intentionally not time specific, so they can be used throughout the year.

Despite everyone’s busy schedules, participation was once again strong. Projects ranged from great displays promoting energy efficiency to organizing Power Smart “button” days for employees and “Conservation in the Workplace” workshops for customers’ employees.

This year we also upped the ante with numerous great prizes:

  • A draw for monthly employee lunches throughout 2009 (maximum $300/lunch) at a restaurant of your choice. Congratulations to the lucky winner, Westburne, Prince George.
  • A $1000 lunchroom makeover for the branch within a distributor firm (with two or more branches) that showcased the best Power Smart display as judged by the Power Smart team. Seven branches across the province took home the top honours: HD Supply of Litemor; Albrite of Coquitlam; EB Horsman of Williams Lake; Eecol of Surrey; Nedco of Prince George; Torbram of Langley; and Westburne of Victoria. Use of the $1000 prize is proving to be as creative as the promotional initiatives themselves, with purchases to date including a couch for the lunchroom, a satellite radio to improve reception in the branch’s remote location and an Energy Star refrigerator.

Thanks to everyone who participated and for helping to spread the conservation message across the province.
