In the last decade, Alliance members have been working closely with customers to help them install energy efficient products in their workplace settings and facilities. Now we’re turning to the very people who manage the use of these products – the building operators – to ensure they are being used to full advantage.
Building operators are found in almost every market sector, where they oversee a wide variety of structures, from government facilities to high-end commercial properties. These days, many of them find their jobs quickly changing, due in large part to equipment advances from traditional HVAC and lighting equipment to more integrated and technologically sophisticated systems. At the same time, there is increasing market demand for ‘green’ buildings with eco-friendly practices, particularly in the commercial sector.
In concert with Power Smart’s increased focus on training for industry members, the Alliance is developing a multi-pronged plan to ensure building operators have the knowledge, support and products they need to operate their facilities at optimum levels of energy efficiency. This approach relies on direct input from the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) as well as expanded efforts from Alliance members to work with operators to implement and maintain robust conservation solutions.
We are presently compiling a list of all building operators and associations in BC, so that we can connect directly with them about training opportunities. We’re also working with BOMA to identify what training is needed and wanted for its membership. Next, we’ll be exploring ways to provide Alliance members with direct incentives, such as Project Points, to reward them for their work with building operators. We’re also planning a series of peer-networking events and investigating the development of a ‘best practices’ program for building operators, which would include coaching and a variety of one-day technical seminars.
Our ultimate goal is to encourage building operators to maximize their buildings’ energy conservation potential, and to help them recognize that by doing so, it’s a win-win for all: reduced energy costs and a chance to learn from the best in the business – Alliance members and industry experts; a sustained contribution to Power Smart’s green building culture; and opportunities for Alliance members to expand their business and further support energy conservation across the province.
