From iPads to PlayStation 3s, we're enjoying technology in our homes that can make life easier and more enjoyable. But we're also using more electricity than ever before.

Meanwhile, the electricity system that supplies the energy to power it all hasn't kept pace. Meters – the devices that measure how much electricity customers are using – have not fundamentally changed since the 1950s.
