Turbine arrives after long journey

The turbine for the fifth generating unit at the Revelstoke Generating Station was built in Brazil and travelled over 12,000 km to get to Revelstoke in 2009.

Once installed, the turbine will provide an additional approximate 500 megawatts of dependable capacity to the Revelstoke Generating Station.

Work to be completed in early 2011

The Revelstoke Generating Station was originally designed to accommodate additional generating units, so the Revelstoke 5 project – which cost between $230 and $250 million – did not involve significant changes to the facility.

Construction during the Revelstoke Unit 5 Project included:

  • Installation of a fifth penstock;
  • Placement of concrete to form the draft tube and house the generating unit;
  • Design, fabrication and installation of the generating unit;
  • Electrical work to tie the generating unit into switchgear; and
  • Upgrades to existing generating station equipment.
