Adding turbine was best value for ratepayers

Revelstoke Unit 5 was the most cost-effective source available to BC Hydro for meeting increased capacity demands in a growing province.

The addition of a fifth generating unit at Revelstoke provides additional dependable system capacity needed to help BC Hydro meet peak electricity demand.

Revelstoke 5 helps meet growth in demand

BC Hydro is dedicated to fulfilling its goal of meeting 66 per cent of the province’s future electricity needs through conservation by 2020.

But in order to meet the remaining 34 per cent of this increased demand and continue to ensure a clean, reliable supply of energy, BC Hydro is investing now in the projects that are needed to keep the lights on in our province for the next 50 years.

The benefits of adding a fifth unit to the Revelstoke facility includes:

  • Low cost to ratepayers. Revelstoke Unit 5 was the most cost-effective source available to BC Hydro for this additional capacity.
  • Meeting the demand for BC Hydro customers. Revelstoke Unit 5 provides additional dependable system capacity needed to help BC Hydro meet peak electricity demand.
  • Maximizing the value of BC Hydro assets. Because Revelstoke is situated between two major storage reservoirs – Kinbasket and Arrow – the addition of a fifth unit provides flexibility and optimal operation of this storage.
