Mica 5 & 6: Why it's important

Meeting peak demand, province-wide

The Mica Generating Station, located along the Columbia River about 135 kilometres north of Revelstoke, has been in operation since 1977. It accounts for roughly 15 per cent of our installed capacity.

Originally designed as a six-unit facility, it’s been operating with only four generating units, the last two turbine bays set aside for the future.

The demand for electricity in B.C. continues to grow, especially during periods of peak demand. By installing two new generating units in the unused bays at Mica Generating Station, we can add approximately 1,000 megawatts of electricity to the grid, enough to power 80,000 homes during periods of peak demand.
