Long Beach Area Reinforcement

Keeping up with demand on Vancouver Island

The transmission delivery system to the West Coast of Vancouver Island was at capacity. The two substations serving the area, Great Central Lake and Long Beach substations, constructed about 50 years ago, were pushed to capacity and would have been unable to meet future electricity load and reliability standards. We initiated the Long Beach Area Reinforcement Project to add additional capacity to the system and reinvest in the transmission delivery system by upgrading these two substations.

What's happening?

The Great Central Lake and Long Beach substations have been upgraded with transformers and equipment that have more than twice the capacity of the original transformers and will serve the West Coast for another 30 to 50 years.

Schedule & activities

The newly upgraded Great Central Lake and Long Beach substations are now in service.
