Unexpected gift brightens our day… and our office

A small knock on our office door interrupted a busy day at work planning our next road trip. We opened the door to find a couple of delightful kids from a local daycare accompanied by one of their teachers, with a colourful poster in their hands.

A few weeks earlier, two of our representatives visited the daycare to read a story about energy conservation. At a BC Hydro Story Time, representatives teach kids about conservation at a basic level. They are able to learn about taking care of the environment and saving electricity, even at a young age. The kids at this daycare were particularly enthusiastic, eagerly putting up their hands to tell us all the ways they were helping their families save electricity.

Little did we know, after we had left that day, the kids had excitedly begun working on a thank you poster that they would personally deliver. A green sky with a metallic-blue lake was decorated with brightly-coloured marine life. Lightening bolts had the kids’ conservation pledges written on them: “I will turn off the lights!” “I will turn off the TV and satellite!” The daycare staff told us about how excited the kids now were about saving energy and sharing this knowledge with their families.

We put our poster up on our office wall, where it reminds us of a day well spent. It was great to see how much even the youngest kids had learned from our presentation. We are building a conservation culture – and meeting some great kids along the way.
