It was a cool Friday evening at BC Place as the fans entered the stadium to watch the BC Lions take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. As the crowd collected biodegradable ‘Bam Bams’ from Community Outreach reps near the door, they were unaware that they were about to witness a heated mascot soccer match.

Tensions were high as team ‘Fur and Feathers’ and team ‘Everything Else’ mentally prepared for an intense match whose winners would hold the title until next year’s game. “That TV better watch its back”, stated an anonymous teddy bear mascot in the corner of the dressing room.

As the second quarter of the football game came to an end, the Lions left the field, but fans went wild as the mascots left their dressing room and marched towards the turf. The energized crowd roared, “Power Smart, Power Smart, Go Girls” as BC Hydro’s ‘Twinkles’ the TV and ‘Lady Lightning’ Lamp gave high-fives to the eager fans leaning over the rail to catch a glimpse of the dynamic duo.

Decked out in full soccer gear, their hearts raced as their names were announced over the PA. Pumped and ready to showcase their skills, the giant plush soccer ball was dropped and the mascots stampeded towards it.

An intense match ensued; ‘Twinkles’ the TV remembers “I had a rough start to the game. I overcame a malfunction with my VCR which sat on my head; my vision was a little fuzzy. But despite my circumstances I managed to get a breakaway, however Leo the Lion blocked my shot. The tables turned when I stole the ball back from Leo with my fancy footwork, passed it to ‘Lady Lightning’ Lamp, and we changed the course of the game.”

After many shots, some hard tackles, a few fouls, and a couple handballs, the score remained 0-0. ‘Lady Lighting’ Lamp decided to tear it up. “I had a good run down the left wing, weaving in and out of my rivals,” ‘Lady Lightning’ describes. “Then I made a cross to the front of the net and towards the other players. Out of the mass of mascots a shot flew towards the goal. Leo, who was playing goalkeeper, fumbled the ball. I dashed forward and went for the rebound. With a force of strength I kicked the ball away from Leo’s grip and into the net!”

“GOAL!” The announcer screamed as ‘Lady Lighting’ Lamp jumped and pumped her fists in the air. The duo found each other again: fists pounded, chests bumped and boots were shined in an epic celebration.

These BC Hydro Power Smart figures are energy stars on and off the field. It is their mission to educate the public with energy conservation messaging as well as lighting the way to a better future. This electrifying pair can be seen throughout the community encouraging everyone to “Save like Champions!”

In the end BC Hydro’s mascots scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory in their first Mascot Soccer match. What a feat for BC Hydro’s goal towards energy conservation!
