When your job is to generate awareness and excitement around energy conservation, visiting schools full of eager children is fantastic. This was exactly the case for us Community Outreach representatives at Second Street Community School in Burnaby.
Outreach arrived with the Power the Games bobsleds and slalom course – interactive games designed to educate on energy creation and conservation – and got the fun started. As the children poured out of their classroom doors one wave after another, the excitement and pride in being a part of BC Hydro's conservation initiative grew.
The children were thrilled to watch a six minute video inside the Conservation Lab, in which BC Hydro outlines its energy story in an exciting audio-visual experience. Following the video, one group after another left the lab chanting conservation cheers: "Turn it off!!", "Play Outside!!", and "Go Team Power Smart!!" were only some. After receiving their Power the Games lanyards, they each stood proudly atop the Save Like a Champion podium, and made pledges to consume less electricity.
We all agreed, these children were some of the best behaved and most excited to learn about conservation. The students, teachers… even the principal was excited to participate in all the conservation activities! This is an excellent sign that our message is sinking in.
