Outreach home run

Where: Victoria Seals Game

A sea of green, biodegradable bam bams and glowing LED lanyards were sprinkled throughout the crowd. It was easy to see that BC Hydro Outreach had arrived at the Victoria Seals baseball game last Friday night.

A hot summer evening, burgers grilling nearby, a lively crowd, and a close game; it was a fun night to be an outreach representative.

Donning a blue and green wig, a Power Smart jersey and pompoms, I got my 15 seconds of fame as a BC Hydro “Superfan” in front of the large, energetic crowd. Nervous about delivering the ceremonial first pitch, local softballer, Amy Acheson anxiously asked about me and my two fellow Superfans: “Can they come with me?”

We had the chance to get on the field to cheer on Amy and even snuck in one of our Power Smart cheers usually reserved for parades.

Between innings, two reps disguised as a lamp and TV hit the field to cheer on a young boy running the bases against the Seals’ mascot, Seamore. A dramatic slide into third base, (which he thought was home) clinched it for the little boy, who received a raucous cheer from the crowd. Reps celebrated by throwing Seals T-shirts into the crowd (somewhat of a challenge given their stubby mascot arms).

Restless kids in the stands found entertainment at our booth bobsledding, running through our Power Smart slalom course, and checking out the interactive “Conservation Lab.” Parents and other adult fans poured down to our booth between innings to sign up for Team Power Smart and sometimes tried their hand at a bobsled race as well.

Unfortunately the Seals didn’t win the game, but conservation came out on top!

Amy Phipps is a Community Outreach representative based out of Nanaimo and will be at community events throughout the summer.
