Where: Nat Bailey Stadium, Vancouver
You may have doubted the impact of simply turning off your lights and opening the blinds, but if you have over 1.5 acres of field to illuminate, the difference is obvious.
This season BC Hydro is excited to bring back Power Smart Nooners as part of their sponsorship with the Vancouver Canadians baseball club. With a little help from the midday sun, Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium has turned off their lights to play ball.
Daylight is by far the best light source: It's free, sustainable and increases wellbeing and productivity. So hopefully we can see a few more balls hit out of the park for conservation.
Not only have the Canadians shut off their unnecessary field lights, they have also undergone a number of lighting upgrades. For businesses, upgrading an entire lighting system to a new, energy-efficient system can reduce energy use and energy bills by up to 40%.
The fans and staff at Nat Bailey have come to identify BC Hydro Community Outreach representatives and their bright green tents as their unofficial pre-game energy boost. One young fan has come to a number of the Power Smart Nooners and has always remembered to bring her set of Power Smart hand-clappers made out of recycled material.
Her simple action is a reminder that it is important to reuse items whenever you can. She told one Community Outreach representative, "I brought it with me so I could clap along with the crowd and not have to take more than I need."
That goes for lighting too. So as long as the sun continues to shine, Outreach representatives will be at all the Power Smart Nooners. Please find the schedule for more information.
And if you are lucky enough to be seated in just the right section, you will also find yourself the proud new owner of a pair of Power Smart Sunglasses. Why? Because the sun never sets on being Power Smart.
Let's play ball!
