Five-year-old energy-saving enthusiast

A couple of weeks ago, I heard that my niece recently had BC Hydro Outreach visit her Montessori school to do a story time program. She raved about the experience and was very excited about energy conservation. When her mom explained to her that her very own Auntie B was also a Community Outreach representative, Annabelle was even more ecstatic about BC Hydro. “Can Auntie B bring me some more magic seed paper?” she asked her mom, referring to an activity from story time.

This past weekend at the Cloverdale Blueberry Festival, I was busy playing the bean bag toss and slalom activity with many children and families. When I glanced up, I saw the next child in line for the activity, a little girl with pretty butterfly face paint wearing a pink sweat suit.

After a few seconds, I realized it was actually Annabelle! Her face shone with excitement – not only were there BC Hydro Community Outreach representatives, but an entire tent full of BC Hydro activities in front of her.

Annabelle eagerly raced through the slalom activity with me, switching an incandescent with a compact fluorescent lamp, turning off the lights, and hanging a shirt to dry. I rewarded her with a pair of biodegradable “Bam Bams” to add to her collection of BC Hydro paraphernalia. Annabelle also played the bean bag toss and answered questions about energy conservation at home. I know that her mom always reminds her to turn the bathroom light off and to turn off the tap when brushing her teeth. It was a very rewarding experience to be able to share part of the Power the Games tour with my niece.

Brigitte Drescher is a Community Outreach representative based out of Surrey and will be at community events throughout the summer and fall.
