Where: Actua Science Camp, SFU, Burnaby
BC Hydro community outreach representatives were at Actua Science Camps throughout the summer. Science campers enjoyed activities such as power-paving word games, conservation pictionary, writing pledges to save energy as well as racing against the clock to complete the Power Smart slalom course.
At Actua, the children are all divided into four different teams: Planets, Supernovas, Black holes and Stars. Each team is competing for one hundred points by the end of science camp. Points are awarded for listening nicely to camp reps, helping to clean up, participating in activities and answering tricky Power Smart questions when the Outreach crew arrives on site.
August 19th was the last day of Actua camps at SFU’s “Geering Up!” camps. It was a beautiful day and the children were really excited for us to visit. The children lined up to give everyone a turn at the course.
Finally, it came down to the last racer. He was eager to prove that he was the fastest at conserving energy. The children had been cheering modestly for each power-saving participant. One of our team mates then said, “I only give points to those who cheer the loudest for conservation!”
And that was all it took. The children began jumping with energy and cheering on the last racer, as he wove his way through the course. With the children and reps cheering him on, he made a great leap for the FINISH and was congratulated by the other campers for a job well done.
The outreach reps had such a great time watching the children cheer on conservation, that we awarded the teams with 10 points each. It was so exciting to hear and see the children full of team spirit. It really is days like those that gets us all into the spirit of conserving. If you think you have the spirit to compete in our slalom course, check out our interactive map to find out where we’ll be next.
