Where: GM Place, Vancouver
It was an exciting night at GM Place on Sunday April 4th: it was the arena’s 300th consecutive sellout crowd and it was captain Roberto Luongo’s 31st birthday.
The Vancouver Canucks faced a big game against the Minnesota Wild to potentially clinch the NHL’s Northwest Division. In addition, BC Hydro’s Team Power Smart was the game night sponsor as part of the thank you to British Columbians for reaching our goal of having 210,000 people sign up for Team Power Smart.
As a representative with BC Hydro’s Community Outreach, I was lucky to attend this event and inspire more people to join the Team and commit to reducing their energy consumption by 10%. To engage as many of the 18,810 people at the game, our team divided in two and set up booths on the upper and lower bowls of GM Place. We also had help communicating our message from public announcements and jumbo-tron advertisements that were broadcast throughout the game.
British Columbians who joined Team Power Smart at the game that evening were entered into two exciting contests: a chance at winning two Canucks jerseys and a chance at winning Canucks playoff tickets. While these prizes were a great incentive, many of the people I spoke with were just as enthusiastic about conserving electricity. It is refreshing to know that people wanted to sign up for that sole purpose.
As the timer wound down and at the end of the second intermission it was time for Outreach to draw the jersey winner. Fin, the Canucks mascot was there to help present the jersey. He even had time to pose with the Outreach Reps as well!
Though there was only one prize winner that evening, Team Power Smart welcomed 277 new members, all whom I’m sure will be energy stars!
On the ice, Canucks centre and Team Power Smart Leader Ryan Kesler scored a short-handed goal and the game remained close with the Canucks in the lead for most of the game. Unfortunately the Wild came back and scored two goals in the last 42 seconds of the third period. After the Outreach Team wrapped up, the game went into over time but defenceman Sami Salo scored to give the Canucks the title of best team in the Northwest.
All in all, it was a big win for the Canucks but an even bigger win for Team Power Smart!
