Canfor employees compete for creative ways to save

Where: Canfor Employee Awareness, Prince George

Early this fall BC Hydro Outreach visited the Canfor plants in Prince George for an Employee Energy  Awareness barbeque. The early autumn day was the perfect temperature for grilling burgers and discussing conservation. Canfor employees were more than excited to try out our exciting slalom course and learn about all the great savings hiding in their home.

As their company Canfor has fostered a conservation culture, employees were looking to join Team Power Smart and learn about current Power Smart programs. Many employees were looking to save more money with winter quickly approaching. And in Prince George, winter means business!

One employee in particular was so excited that he could hardly wait to share his findings with us. He began by draft proofing his home and installing a programmable thermostat. He continued to set back his home’s temperature by five degrees for eight hours of every night, to save approximately 10% on his heating bill. The excitement in his voice made me smile and I was so proud of him for making that little change.

He went on to share his findings with his co-workers and before I knew it we had a party of seven workers sharing stories and findings with each other, ranging from installing water saving shower heads to purchasing a new front loading washer and dryer.

It was a fantastic afternoon of conservation findings in and around our homes and burger sharing. If one person’s conviction can stir-up just a little bit of excitement, imagine what we can do as a province. As a Community Outreach representative, it is so rewarding to know that our message is being heard and that people really are passionate about conserving and making this province sustainable.

Tanya Sucloy is a Community Outreach representative based out of Burnaby and will be at community events throughout the fall.
