Where: throughout the province
We like to think that our time at BC Hydro starts and ends with community. The community outreach representatives are students and recent grads just entering the workforce while the Power Pioneers are retirees helping to preserve BC Hydro's legacy. Both are active in their communities promoting BC Hydro's core values.
The Power Pioneers spent the spring months visiting regional science fairs across the province. As part of BC Hydro's sponsorship of the Science Fair Foundation, the Power Pioneers award bright youth in grades 4 – 12 in 11 different cities with the BC HydroPower Smart Award.
This award asks students to creatively demonstrate electrical conservation and its environmental, social and economical impacts. Barry Swift Power Pioneer from 100 Mile House most enjoys the enthusiasm and uniqueness of the students. He claims that "The students take their projects very seriously, although it was fun judging (the science projects) it was much harder than anticipated."
"This year, as in the past, the students have excelled both locally and nationally", says Patti Leigh, Executive Director of the Science Fair Foundation. "BC Hydro's support for the Foundation enables students to participate in this educational experience and encourages our young people to pursue careers in science and technology – and to become tomorrow's innovators.
Of the 11 Power Smart award winners, Davis Majcher's (Solar Saver), Keltie Murdoch (Garbage in...Not Garbage Out) and Shakti Ramkumar (Ecological Footprint – The most important Accounting Tool for the Planet) went on to compete in the National Canada Wide Science Fair Competition against 467 students.
Shakti Ramkumar of BC's South Fraser Region walked away from the national competition with three awards.
