The Adventures of Lamp Man

Lamp Man, Cory FarquharsonIt's not easy being a lamp. But Cory Farquharson, who is about to begin a third stint as one of BC Hydro's Comunity Outreach representatives, makes it look easy.

Cory spends his summers traveling around B.C. spreading the Power Smart vibe. He attends parades and fireworks, community festivals and sporting events. Sometimes he wears a bamboo Power Smart polo shirt, but sometimes he transforms into Lamp Man.

Lamp Man is a special kind of hero. His ability? Turning off. He teaches the benefits of compact fluorescent bulbs and helps people see how they can make a difference by flicking a light switch.

"People of all ages and walks of life can participate and learn ways to help save energy," says Cory.

"There's no "I" in team," says Lamp Man.

Cory is proud of his role with BC Hydro and likes the fact that by influencing even one person to turn off their lights he's having an impact on our environment and the future. With a couple of years experience, he's now a team leader, guiding the efforts of 14 Outreach reps. "It's fun to get everyone excited," he says, "and then convey that to customers."

Lamp Man is a friend to celebrities. He's met Steve Nash and has stared at Sarah McLachlan from afar.

Lamp Man has participated in road races, nearly beating Stilt Man in the Science World Fun Run, and competed in a slam-dunk competition. "We had to miss," says Lamp Man.

"But Lamp Man always wins if people turn off their lights."
