A heritage building in downtown Fernie will become the city’s museum and visitors centre. The beautiful two-story structure was a BC Hydro facility until it was sold to the City of Fernie in September 2008.

About this region

The East Kootenay Region extends from Creston east to the Elk Valley and north to Field, and is situated between three mountain passes. The region borders the U.S. to the south and Alberta to the east.

Mining and forestry are the key industries and the entire region relies on tourism and recreation activities.

The region includes 10 small to mid-size incorporated communities with a population of approximately 60,000 living in aboriginal and non-aboriginal communities. Cranbrook is the largest community in the East Kootenay and is the service centre for the area.
