Kids compete in Mind Grind challenge

Nanaimo’s first Environmental Mind Grind (EMG) academic challenge was held this year. Organized by the Nanaimo Recycling Exchange and proudly supported by BC Hydro, this fun contest assesses knowledge of environmental issues that affect the local community as well as the entire planet.

Staged like the Jeopardy game show, the boisterous finale took place on April 18 at Nanaimo North Town Centre. A BC Hydro representative was a guest judge at the event and Team Power Smart hosted an interactive booth with Power Smart tips and information for contestants and spectators alike.

Students in grades 4 to 7 prepared for the Environmental Mind Grind by researching topics such as energy conservation, air quality, transportation demand management, forestry health, species and spaces, waste reduction, water conservation and watershed health.

First and second place winners will be invited to participate in the EMG B.C. Playoffs, with a chance to win cash donations for their schools.
