The Green Choice Forum, part of the YWCA’s High School Mentorship Program, was held on March 31. BC Hydro was proud to be a joint sponsor of the event with the YWCA Vancouver.
The Green Choice Forum is aimed at girls in grades 9 to 12 who have an interest in sustainability and environment-related careers.
This year, 50 young women from the school districts of Vancouver, Burnaby, North Vancouver, Coquitlam and Surrey gained insight into related careers ranging from engineering, technology, media, policy and law.
BC Hydro’s Allison Morrison, Manager of Technology Development in the Office of the Chief Techology Officer, and Wendy Avis, a policy analyst who is working on greenhouse gas strategies and related climate change issues, were panelists. They were joined by seven other women with varied backgrounds, all of whom are working with local and international companies or projects.
After the panel discussion, students had the chance to speak with panelists in small groups. This made it easier to have conversations about career paths. Panelists were asked about their paths to their current career achievements, and talked about future opportunities.
Students said that the Green Choice Forum was enlightening and informative, and that they appreciated the diversity of career options that were represented.
