Changes to BC Hydro's Employee-Giving Program

Beginning in 2012, BC Hydro will transition administration of the BC Hydro Employee's Community Services (HYDRECS) Fund to the United Way, which will administer our employee giving program province-wide. As with HYDRECS, BC Hydro employees and retirees donations will continue to support communities through charities of choice and through United Way.

The HYDRECS Fund will honour all existing funding commitments to community groups. However, as we close the 2011 campaign, we are no longer able to accept funding applications for 2012. We would like to thank you for working with the HYDRECS Fund and for taking the time to participate with BC Hydro employees and retirees over the years.

BC Hydro employees and retirees have appreciated our relationship with all of the community groups we have worked with since the inception of HYDRECS in 1989. We hope that we can continue to support your organization through our association with United Way.

BC Hydro, along with our partners – the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers – are committed to working with United Way to make this transition as smooth as possible, and to ensure that employees and retirees continue to have the ability to give to charities in a variety of ways.

This HYDRECS website will offer updated information about United Way, and its role in communities throughout the province, beginning in early 2012.

Provincial Project

The HYDRECS Committee is pleased to announce BC Cancer Foundation as the recipient in the provincial special project category of the 2012 HYDRECS Fundraising Campaign.

The BC Cancer Foundation is receiving up to $100,000 from HYDRECS for the purchase of an Endoscopic simulator that provides better care for patients diagnosed with lung cancer, reducing the need for invasive surgery, risky procedures and biopsies.

The BC Cancer Foundation is an independent charitable organization that raises funds to support breakthrough research and care at the BC Cancer Agency. It is responsible for cancer care and control for everyone in British Columbia.

Regional Projects

The Lower Mainland Project

The Aunt Leah's Independent Life Skills Society is receiving up to $30,000 for the expansion of a third Christmas Tree lot. These lots are a business enterprise in the Lower Mainland that dedicates 100% of its profits to fund programs that help prevent children in foster care from becoming homeless, and young mothers from losing custody of their children.

This fund provides supports for start-up costs ranging from advertising to tents that will put the location on firm footing for future profitability.

The Northern Project

The Canadian Red Cross is receiving up to $10,000 to fund Core Capacity Centres to train volunteers specifically in Terrace, Williams Lake and Fort St. John. This complement of volunteers will learn a number of skills ranging from first aid to creating disaster preparedness plans in order to assist the current Red Cross response teams. Such training gives local community members the ability to assist and respond safely and effectively.

The South Interior Project

The East Kootenay Foundation for Health, Golden Hospital is receiving up to $10,000 to fund the purchase of a Billi intensive phototherapy system for the Golden Hospital Neonatal ward. This machine provides treatment of jaundice (hyperbilirubinemia) in newborns.

The East Kootenay Foundation for Health provides medical care to British Columbians living in the Kootenay region. The need to have advanced medical equipment locally continues to increase.

The Vancouver Island Project

The Campbell River Head Injury Support Society is receiving up to $10,000 to fund the purchase of fencing and shrubs to enhance and close off the garden area used by the members of this society. The C.R.H.I.S.S. is dedicated to providing support and education to the survivors of a brain injury, and their families. It is comprised of survivors, family members, caregivers and health care professionals.
